I’m curious about what social media circles you walk in.
I can group all my online friends into boxes. I do a lot of discussion among pastors and ministry types. I’m relatively active in the creative design and photography community. Recently I’ve been talking to a lot more people about social media itself.
The fun part is finding people on Twitter, for example, who are interested in the same things you are and really connecting with them. I’ve connected with hundreds of new people this year. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve taught a lot. I’ve made some genuine friends. And I’ve won some new business, which is a nice bonus.

I’m a twitter, facebook, blog guy.
I blog and Twitter for fun, and primarily enjoy building community there.
Facebook’s not bad, but it’s more of a utility as a youth pastor.
I’m on LinkedIn, but i think it’s worthless. I’ve recently deleted my MySpace account, which i never really used.
Who do you find you interact with most on those various platforms?
Facebook, Twitter, Blogging and YouTube for me. I definitely run with the Ministry crowd and the Marketing crowd. There are quite a few parallels between good marketing and good ministry. I have been looking for Theatre people on social media (I have a predominately drama/theatre background), but I haven’t been able to find them.
There is *a lot* of parallel between good marketing and good ministry. I’ve found the same people run in the same circles online.
If there isn’t a lot of theatre community online it sounds like a space you can really make some noise and become “the theatre guy.” Probably money to be made there.
I’m on Twitter to keep myself sane during the days when I work in my secular office. Of course, it’s amusing the other days too.
I do a lot of ministry via Facebook. It started as student ministry, but it’s starting to expand to the church in general as our pastor realizes we need more of a digital presence than just our mediocre website. It’s also a great ministry opportunity as people from high school find me b/c I’m not the angry, atheist, pro-choice feminist I was in high school/college.
And I blog, and that’s a combination of ministry and fun and venting and letting all of our recently sent-off friends – from South Carolina (we’re in Chicago) to China – keep up with what’s going on in our lives.
I recently set myself up on LinkedIn and am constantly frustrated at how often the program glitches. It’s yielded some good business contacts, though. Waiting to see where that one takes me.
Oh, and I don’t know if Flickr counts, but I’ve been paying more attention to it lately and meeting some good people. I used to just use it for my buds on the Church Marketing Lab (how I love them: http://flickr.com/groups/cfcc/), but I’m stretching that out too lately.
Wow. And I thought I did a lot online. Nicely done.
I have dove in to LinkedIn yet. Probably won’t. Haven’t heard too many people just rave about it.
Yeah, LinkedIn is like the anti-social network. It’s more about recording professional connections rather than making new ones. You can’t “friend” someone unless you actually know them… what’s that about?
I’m on it, but I’ve always sort of considered it a running resume.
